From domestic help to Bengal minister: Kalita Majhi’s extraordinary rise to power

| @indiablooms | Jun 02, 2026, at 07:35 pm

Kalita Majhi, who once worked as a domestic help to support her family, has taken another major step in her political journey after being sworn in as a Minister of State in the West Bengal government.

Her elevation from a grassroots worker to a member of the state cabinet highlights one of the most remarkable political success stories to emerge from the recent Assembly elections.

Majhi, who represents the Ausgram Assembly constituency in Purba Bardhaman district, was among the ministers inducted during the latest cabinet expansion.

Her appointment comes shortly after her victory in the Assembly polls, where she secured a decisive win in a constituency reserved for the Scheduled Castes.

From household work to public service

Before entering the political spotlight, Majhi worked as a domestic help in multiple households while managing family responsibilities.

Living in Majhpukur Para under Guskara Municipality, she supported her family alongside her husband, Subrata Majhi, who works as a plumber.

Their son is currently pursuing his studies after appearing for Class 12 examinations.

Financial hardship forced Majhi to discontinue her formal education at an early stage.

To help sustain her family, she took up domestic work, earning a modest monthly income while navigating everyday challenges faced by many working-class families.

Her experiences during those years, she has said, helped her understand the concerns of ordinary people and the difficulties faced by economically weaker sections of society.

Political journey began at grassroots

Majhi entered active politics more than a decade ago and steadily worked her way up through the ranks of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Beginning as a booth-level worker, she remained involved in organisational activities and grassroots mobilisation.

Her political career gained wider attention when the BJP fielded her as its candidate from Ausgram during the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Although she lost that contest, her performance established her as a significant local leader.

In the 2021 election, Trinamool Congress candidate Abhedananda Thander won the seat with 1,00,392 votes, while Majhi finished second with 88,577 votes.

The BJP retained confidence in her leadership and nominated her again for the 2026 Assembly elections.

Ausgram victory delivers political breakthrough

The party's decision to give Majhi a second opportunity proved successful.

Contesting once again from Ausgram, she defeated Trinamool Congress candidate Shyama Prasanna Lohar by a margin of 12,535 votes.

Majhi secured 1,07,692 votes in the constituency, turning her earlier electoral setback into a significant political victory.

The result emerged as one of the notable outcomes of the BJP's broader success in the state elections.

Following her victory, Majhi expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party leadership for placing their faith in her candidature.

She stated that her focus would remain on improving infrastructure, supporting youth development and enhancing women's safety.

Cabinet expansion brings ministerial responsibility

On Monday, Governor RN Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to the newly inducted ministers at Lok Bhawan in Kolkata.

Majhi was among 35 ministers inducted into Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari's cabinet, taking the total strength of the Council of Ministers to 41.

The expansion included 13 cabinet ministers, three Ministers of State with independent charge and 19 Ministers of State.

Shortly after taking the oath, Majhi described the appointment as an emotional and unexpected milestone in her life.

She noted that while her responsibilities as an MLA were focused on her constituency, her new ministerial role would involve serving the interests of the entire state.

Development priorities for constituency

Majhi has outlined several priorities for the development of her constituency and the surrounding areas.

She has spoken about the need to improve road connectivity, expand access to drinking water and strengthen healthcare infrastructure.

Among her key proposals is the establishment of a hospital closer to her village, reducing the need for residents to travel to Burdwan town for medical treatment.

She has also highlighted plans related to employment generation, infrastructure development and the promotion of solar energy.

In addition, Majhi has advocated for the wider implementation of central government welfare schemes, including housing initiatives aimed at providing secure homes and sanitation facilities to eligible beneficiaries.
