New Delhi, Oct 2 (UNI) Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday appealed to people to avoid using plastic bags as they are dangerous for the environment.

"I urge you all to avoid the use of plastic polybags, they are very dangerous for environment and our health. Everyone must carry a cloth bag while going out for shopping", Mr Shah said while inaugurating Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) 'Gandhi Sankalp Yatra' from Haiderpur Ramlila Maidan in the national capital on the occasion of 150th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi.

He called for making 'single-use plastic ban' campaign a mass movement.

"It is responsibility of all the people and the party workers to make this campaign a mass movement as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged to free the country from single-use plastic", he said.

He noted that single-use plastic is not only harmful for humans but is also adversely affecting animals. "We will move forward under the leadership of the Prime Minister in building a pollution-free clean India.", Shah said.

Acknowledging Gandhi's Satyagraha movement which brought the British to their knees, the Home Minister said that Gandhi Ji showed the world path of truth and non violence. " We shall spread awareness about Gandhiji's principles across the country", he added.

He asked party workers that this year -- 150th year of Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary -- should be made the year of resolution to take nation forward.
The Sankalp Yatra will conclude on January 31, next year.
