Lucknow/IBNS: A Uttar Pradesh Women's Commission member has stirred a row through his advice to women to avoid rapes in the state, as the remark is widely seen as derogatory.

Meena Kumari, the commission member, said, "Rapes are increasing but society needs to see a few things as well. Parents must check the mobile phones of their daughters and see to whom they are speaking.

"Often girls talk to boys on the phone and run away with them."

Distancing from the comment, the commission vice president, Anju Chaudhary, said as quoted by Times Now, "Instead of saying that we should not give mobile phones to girls, we should be teaching them not to chat with strangers and educate them on the safe use of mobile phones."

Slamming Kumari, Samajwadi Party (SP) spokesperson Juhi Singh , "And she's incharge of protection women's rights , wonder if madme uses a mobile herself ?"

Trinamool Congress (TMC) Women's Wing chief and Lok Sabha MP, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, tweeted, "God save the people from the unapologetically patriarchal & regressive mindset of @BJP4India-ruled states! If a Women's Commission member can make such an awfully misguided statement without any repercussions, it is a dark state of affairs in UP."
