Gorakhdham mishap: PM Modi announces relief

New Delhi, May 27 (IBNS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed the Railway Ministry to ensure that the relief operations following the Gorakhdham rail accident are carried out smoothly.

 Modi said that it must be seen that all the injured are provided the best possible medical care.

The Prime Minister has sanctioned an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh each to the next of kin those deceased from the Prime Minister`s National Relief Fund and Rs 50,000 each of those seriously injured in the accident.

The Railway authorities on Tuesday said at least 24 people were killed and over 100 others were injured when six bogies of the Gorakhdham Express got derailed near Churaid Railway Station at Sant Kabir Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh on Monday.

The death toll is likely to rise, said officials.

Over 100 people were injured as the Express train hit a stationary goods train near Khalilabad city.

Out of the six coaches, four were general coaches and two were AC coaches -- AC first class and AC two tier, reports said.

A probe into the mishap was ordered by Commissioner Railway Safety (Northeast circle) PK Bajpayee.

The Railways on Monday ordered a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to the family of those killed and Rs 50,000 for those seriously injured. A sum of Rs 10,000 will be given to those who sustained simple injuries.

The train was going from Delhi to Gorakhpur.
