Grand Alliance seals Bihar deal, RJD to contest 135 seats, Congress 61: Reports

After weeks of tense negotiations and internal bickering, Bihar’s Grand Alliance has finally reached a seat-sharing formula involving modest compromises by both Lalu Prasad Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress, NDTV reported, quoting sources.

The RJD, which had initially sought 144 of the state’s 243 Assembly seats, will now contest 135, while the Congress, which was eyeing 70 seats, has settled for 61.

The remaining seats will go to the Left Front and Mukesh Sahani’s Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), sources told NDTV.

Crucially, the allies have also reached an understanding on the issue that had kept the Congress undecided for days, the projection of Tejashwi Yadav as the Chief Ministerial face of the alliance.

While Tejashwi’s leadership has now been accepted by all partners, there is no clarity yet on whether he will have any deputy chief ministers, sources told NDTV.

The deal marks a key breakthrough for the Opposition bloc ahead of the Bihar Assembly polls, as it attempts to present a united front against the ruling NDA.

The Bihar Legislative Assembly election 2025 is set to be conducted in two phases, on November 6 and November 11.

Counting of votes will take place on November 14.
