Gujarat HC issues notices to Cong ex-MLA Alpesh, Assembly Speaker

Ahmedabad, Jun 24 (UNI) The Gujarat High Court on Monday issued notices to former MLA Alpesh Thakor and Assembly Speaker Rajendra Trivedi on Congress' plea seeking direction to the Assembly Speaker to disqualify the former from the membership of the House with immediate effect.

The court has also sought explanation from the Speaker and fixed June 27 as the next date of hearing.

Congress had moved the High Court here last month after Thakor, a former party MLA from Radhanpur seat in North Gujarat refused to resign from the membership of the Assembly despite quitting from the party on April 10, days before the Lok Sabha polls in the state.

Mr Thakor had resigned from the Congress alleging betrayal but had asserted that he will not resign from the Assembly to serve the poor and the needy. He had also campaigned against official Congress candidates in Banaskantha LS constituency and Unjha Assembly segment where bypolls were held simultaneously.

Terming it ''sheer indiscipline and anti-party activity'', the Congress had approached the Speaker for his immediate dismissal but as it did not happen the party knocked at the court's door.

Meanwhile, speculations are rife that Thakor might join ruling BJP by the end of the month.
