Gurdaspur firecracker factory blast claims 18 lives

Gurdaspur, Sept 4 (IBNS): At least 18 people died and dozens are feared trapped as an explosion of massive scale took place at a firecracker manufacturing factory in Punjab's Gurdaspur on Wednesday, media reports said.

The incident took place around 4 PM at the factory which is located in a residential area in Gurdaspur's Batala.

The explosion resulted in complete damage of the factory building as well as some adjacent ones.

Following the attack, Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh tweeted: "Deeply anguished to learn of the loss of lives due to the blast in the firecracker factory in Batala. Rescue operations are underway with the DC & SSP heading the relief efforts."

Gurdaspur MP Sunny Deol too expressed grief over the incident and informed that the NDRF have been deployed along with the local administration for the rescue operations.

"Saddened to hear about the news of blast in Batala factory.NDRF teams and local administration has been rushed for rescue operation," he tweeted.
