Hate speech is not freedom of expression: Arun Jaitley

Jaitley was countering a point of Left leader Sitaram Yechury and Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Earlier, Yechury had said in the Parliament that the arrest of students in the JNU case was unfortunate.

He also stated that no one needs to learn nationalism and patriotism from BJP and that the government cannot direct people on how they see the country.

Yechury said, "In the name of that (nationalism) to penalise the university as a whole. That, I think is unfortunate."

"You don't have to teach us patriotism," he said.

Countering the point Jaitley said that even the BJP does not believe in a singular ideology, but anything against the country will not be tolerated.

"Neither the NDA or BJP posses only one ideology should prevail in this country," the Union Finance Minister said.

He also said that by supporting the students and their activities the other parties are applauding those who talk about breaking India.

On the issue of secularism, Azad said, "On the issue of secularism and nationalism, you (BJP) stay in a glass palace. We stay in a safe stone house...if we throw even one stone, the whole glass palace will fall."
