Heavy security in place as Sabarimala Temple set to reopen for puja tomorrow
Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 4 (IBNS): As the Sabarimala Temple of Kerala is all set to open for one-day puja on Monday, heavy security arrangements have been made with about 2000 cops being kept on alert, media reports said.
This comes amid the stand-off between the state government and devotees over the Supreme Court verdict, which allowed menstruating women, belonging to the age group of 10 to 50, to enter the temple.
Even as the Kerala government has vowed to implement the SC verdict, several Hindu outfits have made it clear that they will not allow women aged between 10-50 years to enter the temple.
Anticipating trouble, police have placed prohibitory orders at two base camps, Pamba and Nilakkal, and other areas near the shrine from Saturday night.
Security has also been beefed up in the area with deployment of several policemen there.
The shrine opened on Oct 18 after the Supreme Court had passed the crucial judgement.
However, several men and women had protested outside the temple to prevent the entry of women in the shrine.
Menstruating women were earlier banned from entering the temple for centuries as a part of the religious practice.
A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court on September 28 had lifted the ban on women's entry into the Sabarimala temple declaring the relevant rules as unconstitutional.
