Chennai/IBNS: Six people were killed and 28 others injured after two private buses collided in Tamil Nadu’s Tenkasi district on Monday, according to media reports.

One of the buses was travelling from Madurai to Senkottai, while the other was on its way from Tenkasi to Kovilpatti when the collision occurred.

A senior police official told NDTV that a preliminary investigation has found the Madurai–Senkottai bus to have been driven recklessly.

The injured passengers have been admitted to hospital and are undergoing treatment.

Health officials have cautioned that the death toll may rise.

Police have launched a probe into the incident and are examining CCTV footage and eyewitness statements to determine the exact cause of the crash.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin posted on X, "I am deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of six lives in the bus accident that occurred in Tenkasi Kadayanallur. Immediately, I contacted @KKSSRR_DMK, the District In-Charge Minister, and instructed him to rush to the accident site.

"I have ordered the District Collector, who spoke to me from the scene of the accident, to visit the government hospital and ensure that the affected individuals receive the appropriate high-quality treatment.
