I accept verdict of the people of India: Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi, May 23 (IBNS): Congress president Rahul Gandhi has accepted defeat in the Lok Sabha elections, the results of which are coming out today.

"I accept the verdict of the people of India," said Rahul, who fought a bitter electoral battle with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He congratulated Modi and the NDA on the win and also thanked the people of Wayanad, from where he won.

"Congratulations to the winners, Mr Modi & the NDA. Thank you to the people of Wayanad for electing me as your MP," he tweeted.

He also thanked the people of Amethi and all Congress workers and leaders for the hard-fought campaign.

Smriti Irani of the BJP is set to beat Rahul in Amethi, earlier considered a Congress stronhold.

Wayanad is the second seat from where the Congress president contested.

The NDA is set to return to power for a second consecutive term with a thumping majority.
