IAF to conduct 'touch and go' exercise on UP highway

| @indiablooms | Oct 24, 2017, at 03:33 pm
Lucknow, Oct 24 (IBNS): At least 20 planes, both fighter and transport, of the Indian Air Force (IAF) will take part in a 'touch and go' drill on the Uttar Pradesh highway on Tuesday.

The 'touch and go'drill is performed by several countries where they allow their air forces to use stretches of large roads to use as the runway in case of emergency situations where the airbase gets destroyed by either natural calamity or from enemy strike.

PTI news agency quoted Gargi Malik Sinha, PRO, Defence, Eastern Command as saying, "It is for the first time any transport aircraft will land and then take off from the expressway. The AN-32 are meant for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief during floods or any other natural calamity."

The IAF is likely to use its Super Hercules C-130J, the main transport aircraft, during the drill.

Earlier in 2015, the Mirage-2000 fighters and Sukhoi-30 of the IAF have twice landed on highways in Uttar Pradesh.
