India celebrates 146th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi

New Delhi, Oct 2 (IBNS) India on Friday celebrated the 146th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi with day long programmes and tributes, including the one at his memorial at the Rajghat in the national capital.


Mahatma, born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1869 in Porbandar (Gujarat) to Putlibai and Karamchand Gandhi, was a lawyer turned activist who almost single-handedly shaped India’s freedom struggle against the British Government.

His method of ‘Ahimsa’ (Non-Violence) against the oppressing force, catapulted him as a world leader.

After India gained freedom, he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948.

His birthday is also observed as International Day of Non-Violence.

President of India, Pranab Mukherjee wrote on Twitter: “Gandhi Jayanti is a day when we should rededicate ourselves to Bapu’s ideals of non-violence, peace &tolerance #PresidentMukherjee.”

President Mukherjee urged the citizens of India to follow Gandhi’s path. “I urge all citizens to imbibe wisdom from valued teachings of Gandhiji & strive to translate Bapu’s ideals into action #PresidentMukherjee.”

 
 Pranab Mukherjee paid homage at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi  at Rajghat. 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi,  who visited Rajghat in the morning to pay his respects to the Father of the Nation, tweeted: “Cleanliness was very close to Mahatma Gandhi’s heart. Let us reaffirm our commitment for a Swachh Bharat and fulfil our beloved Bapu’s dream. A clean India will enhance our development journey and benefit the poor.”

Delhi Chief Minister  Arvind Kejriwal wrote: “Gandhi's birthday 2day. Lets pledge 2 put an end 2 divisive politics. Beefban murder outcome of divisive politics. Plzzz. Let's stop this.”

Posting an image of young people paining a graffito on a wall of Gandhiji as a superhero, Kejriwal's cabinet member Kapil Mishra wrote: "Amazing to see students reimagine Bapu as a superhero! Gandhiji is the hero India deserves and the one it needs :) "

Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Chandrababu Naidu wrote: “Deepest tributes to 'Great Soul' Mahatma Gandhi who is symbol of liberation. His spirit lives in our hearts.”

Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee wrote: “Our homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his birthday.”
 
Among the opposition leaders of India, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi wrote: "Remembering Bapu on #GandhiJayanti.May his message of compassion, tolerance & harmony guide us as a people &a nation."

All the leaders also paid their tribute to India's former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastriji on his birth anniversary. 
 
Besides politicians many prominent Indians and people at large celebrated the day while Twitterati was abuzz with messages. 
 
Filmmaker Shekhar Kapur tweeted: "We call him Mahatma n put him on a mantlepiece. And comfortably separate ourselves from him. Rather than follow his example."
 
Meanwhile, in the Gandhi Ashram at Sabarmati all religion prayer was held in the morning. Academician Uma Dasgupta also gave a speech on Gandhi while the ashram is holding a musical evening too.
