INDIA heads for landslide win in assembly bypolls, BJP eyes to bag only 2 seats

New Delhi/IBNS: In an upset for the saffron party, INDIA bloc, which was formed to take on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, is heading for a landslide victory in the assembly byelections held in 13 seats on July 10.

The INDIA bloc is set to win 10 out of 13 seats, while the BJP is aiming to win 2 and Independent 1.

The INDIA bloc's spectacular performance is largely contributed by the Congress (4) and Trinamool Congress (4).

The Congress has won Dehra and Nalagarh assembly constituencies while the BJP has managed to retain Hamirpur seat.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu's wife and Congress candidate Kamlesh Thakur has won from the Dehra assembly segment.

Thakur defeated her nearest rival, BJP's Hoshyar Singh, by 9,399 votes, according to the figure of Election Commission of India's official website.

In Uttarakhand, the Congress is set to win both the seats, Badrinath and Manglaur, as per the trends shown on the Election Commission of India's official website.

In all four seats of West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's TMC, which is opposed to the Congress in the state but is in the INDIA bloc nationally, is set for a clean sweep, dashing the hope for the BJP.

The four seats of West Bengal that went to bypolls are Maniktala, Bagda, Ranaghat Dakshin and Raiganj.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is leading in Punjab's Jalandhar West and Congress' ally DMK is ahead in Tamil Nadu's Vikravandi.

The BJP, which is spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is set to win in Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur and Madhya Pradesh's Amarwara.

Though BJP's key ally Janata Dal (United) was leading in Bihar's Rupauli for a longer period of time, Independent candidate Shankar Singh is presently leading by over 8,000 votes.

The election results will be held as significant as the INDIA bloc managed to reduce the BJP's tally in Lok Sabha to 240, 32 less than the majority mark.

With 240 seats, the BJP needs the mandatory support of its allies to run the government in this term.
