New Delhi: India is observing the 150th birth anniversary of 'Father of the Nation' Mahatma Gandhi on Wednesday.

Wishing the nation on the special day and remembering Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: " Tributes to beloved Bapu! On #Gandhi150
, we express gratitude to Mahatma Gandhi for his everlasting contribution to humanity. We pledge to continue working hard to realise his dreams and create a better planet."

Apart from Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and Vice President Venkaiah Naidu also wished the nation on the special day.

“150th Gandhi Jayanti is a special occasion for all of us to rededicate ourselves to the values of truth, non-violence, harmony, morality and simplicity. Satya, Ahimsa and Sarvodaya formed the bedrock of Mahatama Gandhi’s numerous messages to humanity," Kovind said in his message.

"Gandhiji is a global icon revered across continents. United Nations has marked Gandhi Jayanti as ‘The International Day of Non-Violence’. Gandhian values and many of his methods remain relevant not only for India but for the entire world," he said.

"Gandhiji’s vision and action encompassed almost every facet of individual and collective life. He showed us the path to communal unity, removal of untouchability, upliftment of women, education, sanitation, preserving the environment and water," the Indian top leader said.

"By taking up the ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’ as a movement, the people of India have paid homage to the Father of the Nation. Our nation’s emphasis on inclusive growth, transparency and honesty in public life, health-care support to the poor, support to the farmers and effective utilization of water resources is in keeping with the thoughts of Gandhi Ji," he said.

Vice President of India M. Venkaiah Naidu has greeted the people of our country on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti.

In a message, he said that Gandhiji’s principles of liberty, dignity and equality are not limited by space and time and they have universal applicability and timeless value.

On this Gandhi Jayanti let us collectively pledge to honor the Mahatma by working together to realize his vision for an India that is inclusive, harmonious clean and prosperous, he added.
