India sees biggest jump in COVID-19 cases on Friday; 236 people infected so far

New Delhi/IBNS: India today witnessed the biggest jump in coronavirus cases with at least 50 new cases reported in a single day.

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases today reached 236, said reports.

At least four deaths have occurred so far due to the virus.

So far 15 people have recovered from the infection, said reports.

On March 19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a message to the nation announced Janata Curfew on coming Sunday, March 22 and urged everyone to remain indoor to help protect community spread of the disease which is right now on Stage 2 (virus infecting people with travel history or others coming in close contact with the ones coming from abroad) in India.

"We need 'Janata curfew' right now which means people have to stay indoors," the PM announced.

"This Sunday from 7 AM to 9 PM, all citizens must observe Janata curfew. This small step will be taken for the welfare of the country," he said.

However, experts have expressed concern over the low rate of testing in the country, reports have said.

Till now, India is only utilizing 10 per cent of its testing capacity.  Dr Raman Gangakedhkar of the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) has said.

Mass aggressive testing like South Korea will be vital in containing the impact of the virus, experts have said.

According to the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), India is still in stage 2 of the outbreak.
