India will win if 10 states defeat Coronavirus: PM Modi to CMs

New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said India, the country of 1.3 billion people, will defeat Novel Coronavirus if the 10 worst Covid-19-affected states tackle the contagion successfully.

"A view has emerged that if we defeat coronavirus in 10 states, the nation will also win," Modi said in a virtual meeting with Chief Ministers of 10 states.

The 10 states include Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and West Bengal.

Karnataka was represented by its Deputy CM in the meeting.

Modi said in the meeting, "Experts now say if we identify Covid-19 cases within 72 hours of onset, then infection slows down to great extent."

"Our experience so far is that containment, contact tracing and surveillance are the most effective weapons against Covid-19," he added.

Though India has been recording over 50,000 Covid-19 cases for the past few weeks, the country witnessed a plunge in the daily spike in cases on Tuesday.

The South Asian country registered 53,601 fresh cases of Coronavirus in the past 24 hours, the Ministry of Health reported.

The total number of cases have now touched  22,68,676.

The country has recorded 871 fresh Covid-19 deaths in the same one-day period.

Though India is just behind the United States and Brazil in terms of the total number of cases, the fatality rate due to the virus is much less though health experts have warned that the country's poor health infrastructure may get overwhelmed if the infections continue to rise at a rapid rate.

The fatality rate has slowed down and fell below two percent, in a sign of relief for the country.
