Kolkata, Nov 1 (IBNS): The biggest operational command of the Indian Army - Eastern Command - turned 94 on Saturday. On the occasion, Eastern Army Commander, Lt Gen MMS Rai laid wreath at the "Vijay Smarak" at the Command Headquarters in Fort William in Kolkata paying homage to all those who laid down their lives in the highest traditions of the Indian Army.

Addressing the Command HQ personnel, General Officer commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) Lt Gen Rai reiterated the onerous national responsibility of safeguarding the eastern territory of the nation.

Eastern Command being the largest Command of the Indian Army, he said, will continue to strive for unparalleled professional competence to ensure the highest standards of operational readiness.

He also praised the undying zeal and fervour of the gallant spirit of our soldiers, astute leadership of Commanders and dedication of the staff at Command Headquarters.

Formed on November 1, 1920, The present Eastern Command theatre consists of three distinct geographical regions - the mountainous sectors of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh in the north, the jungle-clad hill tracts of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura and Meghalaya in the east and the south, and the plains of Assam and Bengal.

It has its territorial jurisdiction over all seven north-eastern states collectively called 'seven sisters' that now has an addition of Sikkim, plus West Bengal.

The Command is responsible for military operations along the international borders with Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, Myanmar and Nepal.
