Indian Parl clears historic land agreement with Bangladesh, Modi thanks Sonia, other political parties
New Delhi, May 7 (IBNS): In a significant move, Indian Parliament on Thursday cleared the historic land agreement with Bangladesh to settle a long border dispute.
"Today a historic milestone has been reached in India-Bangladesh relations after the passing of the Constitutional Amendment by Parliament," Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.
He said the Amendment passed ensures a permanent settlement of land boundary with Bangladesh and resolution of long-pending boundary issues.
Modi said it will contribute to a stable and peaceful boundary.
"This would contribute to a stable &peaceful boundary, better management & coordination of the border &will lead to enhanced security as well," he tweeted.
Thanking all political parties for their cooperation, he tweeted: "My thanks to all the political parties for their cooperation, as also to the states of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura & West Bengal."
"This reflects the collective will of the nation to build constructive relations with our neighbours," he tweeted.
Modi also spoke to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to convey his greetings.
"Spoke to Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina and conveyed my greetings to the people of Bangladesh on this landmark occasion," Modi tweeted.
"I want to convey my gratitude to our NDA allies for the support & co-operation that led to passage of India-Bangladesh Land Boundary Bill," he posted.
He also personally thanked Congress leader Sonia Gandhi among others after lawmakers cleared the bill.
"Spoke to Sonia ji, Kharge ji, Jayalalithaa ji, Karunanidhi ji, Yechury ji, Mayawati ji, Mulayam Singh ji, Naveen Babu & Sharad Yadav ji," Modi wrote.
"I thanked these leaders for their support in the historic passage of the Bill that will mark a fresh chapter in our ties with Bangladesh," he posted.
The Constitutional amendment that has now been approved by both houses of Parliament is intend to end decades of uncertainty for tens of thousands of citizens living in enclaves on the "wrong" side of their homeland's border.
Nearly 160 enclaves exist on either side of the border.
The proposed bill would enable each side to acquire the enclaves within its borders, along with other disputed territories.
