Vatican City, Sept 4 (IBNS): External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj,West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal attended canonization ceremony of Mother Teresa here on Sunday.

"Homage to a life spent in service of people. EAM @SushmaSwaraj & Indian deleg'n at canonisation of Mother Teresa," MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup tweeted.

The Delhi CM also attended the ceremony.

His Aam Aadmi Party tweeted: ".@ArvindKejriwal at Vatican city. #SaintMotherTeresa."

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also visited the Vatican.

She tweeted: "I visited the Vatican and some historical places of Rome. Some pictures are uploaded here for all of you."

She had earlier tweeted: "At the invitation of Missionaries of Charity I am leaving for the holy Vatican City to participate in canonization ceremony of Mother Teresa."

Mother Teresa, who dedicated her life serving the poor, on Sunday was declared a saint by Pope Francis officially in the Vatican City in the presence of tens of thousands of her followers and admirers, just 19 years after her death, even as Kolkata, the city she adopted for her work, celebrated the occasion.

Pope Francis around 1030 am local time (2 pm India) began the ceremony at the Vatican to canonise the Catholic nun at St Peter's Square. He later officially declared her a saint.

In Kolkata, a special Mass  at the Missionaries of Charity marked the occasion.

Mother was beatified as "Blessed Teresa of Calcutta" on Oct 19 in 2003 after a first miracle and a second required miracle was credited to her intercession by Pope Francis, in Dec 2015, paving the way for her to be recognized as a saint by the Roman Catholic Church.

Many Kolkatans are among the large number of people from around the world who congregated at the Vatican to watch the ceremony.

In Kolkata, at the Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity (MoC) order headquarters, nuns wait patiently for the special moment when she was declared a saint. People celebrated outside and watch live the ceremony.
