ISIS threat: Kerala to impose trawl ban from midnight on Jun 9 to protect marine resources

| @indiablooms | May 28, 2019, at 10:19 am

Thiruvananthapuram, May 28 (UNI) Kerala Fisheries Minister J Mercykutty Amma has said a 52-day trawl ban will be imposed from midnight on June 9 in the State coastal area to protect marine resources during monsoon season.

The Minister also directed the concerned district collectors to convene a meeting of boat owners, representatives of fishermen and other stake holders on May 29 and 30 in this regard.

This was decided after a meeting chaired by the Minister in this regard on Tuesday evening. Though Kerala had been imposing 47-day trawl ban from 1994, it extended the ban to 52 days from 2008 onwards.

The meeting also decided to issue biometric identity cards to all 1,87,000 fishermen to ensure security of coastal areas in the State.

The decision to issue biometric identity cards was taken in the wake of intelligence reports that ISIS terrorists from Sri Lanka are planning terrorist attacks in Kerala.

The meeting also directed boat owners to ensure boats reach coast before June 8 and boats from other states are advised to leave Kerala coast before June nine.
