Jadavpur University brings back entrance test for undergraduate courses
Kolkata, July 10 (IBNS): Amid a massive protest by the students, the authority of Kolkata's Jadavpur University (JU) on Tuesday night announced to bring back entrance examination for undergraduate courses in the university's arts faculty.
After a hour-long Executive Council (EC) meeting at university's administrative building, registrar of the institute declared that based on the results of entrance test and board examination, fresh admission process will be conducted in the six faculties of JU's Arts department.
"An admission committee will be formed to complete the admission procedure in the six faculties of Arts department," registrar of Jadavpur University, Chiranjib Bhattacharya, said.
"As majority of EC members wanted entrance test system, it has been brought back," Bhattacharya added.
Though university's Vice-Chancellor (VC), Suranjan Das, and pro VC, Pradip Ghosh, detached themselves from the resolution.
Explaining their decision, JU VC Suranjan Das told IBNS, "As we did not agree with the proposal, we detached ourselves from the resolution."
"In such situation, it's really very tough to continue the administration at Jadavpur University and me and pro-VC will appeal for an exemption before West Bengal governor and university's Chancellor Keshari Nath Tripathi," Das said.
After the EC of Jadavpur University announced to scrap entrance examination for admission in undergraduate courses in the university's Arts department on July 4, students had begun agitation inside the campus while a large number of professors stepped down from the admission process to protest against the institute's decision.
Demanding entrance tests for admission, as many as 20 students of the university have been on an indefinite fast since last Friday (July 6) while four of them have been admitted to hospital as their health conditions deteriorated.
Agitating students said that their general body's meeting is currently underway to take decision about the future of their hunger strike.
"Scrapping entrance test was an assault of liberal education system. We are very happy that our university has brought back admission test system and we are considering it as the moral victory of our movement," a protesting student told IBNS.
"After the general body's meeting is over, we will announce the future of our movement as well as the indefinite hunger strike which is underway for more than 90 hours," the student added.
