Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday met US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor when they discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance.

Sharing an image of his meeting with the US envoy, Jaishankar wrote on X: " Pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor of the US today in New Delhi."

"Discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance. Wish him the best for his new responsibility," he said.

The meeting was held amid deteriorating ties between India and the US over Washington's imposition of 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports.

Meanwhile, the US Embassy in India said it was 'excited' to welcome Sergio Gor to New Delhi.

The Embassy's Facebook post said: "He will meet with Indian government counterparts to discuss opportunities to further deepen our ambitious strategic partnership and promote a safer, stronger, and more prosperous relationship."

Gor, who is considered a loyal member of Trump's inner circle, was nominated as the new envoy to India in August.

The US Senate confirmed his appointment this week.
