Jat agitation: Peace returns as Haryana govt assures reservation

| | Feb 22, 2016, at 05:41 pm
Chandigarh, Feb 22 (IBNS) Blockades were withdrawn by the Jats as the much anticipated peace returned to Haryana post the state government's decision to provide reservation for the Jat community, according to reports.

Haryana government assured the Jat leaders that they will be provided with special backward classes reservation after they met with Union home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Venkaiah Naidu has been appointed to oversee the proceedings, according to reports.

The eight-day agitation over the reservation scheme saw at least 12 people die with over 150 injured as the police and protesters clashed.

Curfew was also imposed in five districts.

The situation had worsened on Saturday when an angry mob torched several police vehicles and set ablaze a minister's home.

Owing to the agitation, Delhi also suffered a severe water crisis as schools and collages were shut down.

Earlier the Supreme Court had rejected an appeal by the Jats to grant them OBC status as the apex court said that the community does not come under the demanded criteria in Haryana.

The Jats had received a special OBC status by the preceding CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda in 2013, but was stayed later by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2015.
