JNU row: CPI(M) condemns deployment of forces on protesting students

New Delhi/IBNS: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Monday condemned the deployment of heavy forces on the protesting students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) against the hostel fee hike.

"CPI(M) strongly condemns deployment of heavy police forces to prevent students of JNU from marching and raising their demands. Stands in the solidarity with the students and the demands raised by the students community," the CPI(M) party said in a statement.

Meanwhile, a three-member committee was appointed earlier in the day to recommend ways to restore normal functioning of the JNU.

"With a view to restore the normal functioning of JNU through dialogue with all stakeholders and to advise the university administration for resolution of contentious issues, the government has appointed a three-member high power committee," HRD Secretary R Subrahmanyam tweeted.

The move comes on a day when JNU students have planned a protest march to Parliament, the first day of the winter season, continuing their agitation against the hostel fee hike.

The panel includes former UGC Chairman VS Chauhan, AICTE chairman Anil Sahasrabudhe and UGC Secretary Rajnish Jain.

"The committee will initiate dialogue with the students and university administration immediately and submit recommendations on actions to be taken. The UGC will provide required support for functioning of the committee," the order said.

The students staged a protest last Monday outside the varsity's annual convocation venue, during which HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' had remained stuck for over six hours.

However, the university's Executive Council (EC) had later announced a partial roll back in the fee only for students belonging to BPL category and not availing any scholarships.
