Guwahati/IBNS: Kachutali village under 61 No.Sonapur Gaon Panchayat, Dimoria block in Assam's Kamrup Metro was adopted as 'Giloy village' jointly by Environment and Forest, Sonapur SF Range under Guwahati SF Division and PNRD.

Officials of Forest and Environment and PNRD distributed Giloy saplings to the people of Kachutali village at the Office of Sonapur Gaon Panchayat on Thursday.

The officials urged the people for cultivation of Giloy commercially for its rich medicinal values and ever growing demand in the market.

"Giloy is rich in compounds that can keep various health problems at bay," the officials said.

Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia) has many health benefits that is why it is commonly known as 'Xogunilota'.

A powerhouse of antioxidants, Giloy helps to fight free radicals and keep cells healthy. It eliminates toxins, purifies the blood, fights bacteria that causes diseases and also combats liver diseases and urinary tract infections. It’s also a good immune-modulator and helps to strengthen the immune system. It is ideal for people suffering from coughs and colds, or for those who are prone to stomach infections.

The stem of Giloy is considered highly effective because of its high nutritional contents such as alkaloids, glycosides, steroids, and other compounds. These compounds present in Giloy are very effective against treatment of various disorders such as diabetes, cancer, neurological problems, fever, etc. Even the roots and leaves of the plant also can be used.

Giloy can be grown in a large variety of soils, but it needs proper drainage and sufficient moisture. It doesn’t, however, need daily watering.

The State Medicinal Plant Board is popularising Giloy cultivation for its immense health benefits.

The medicinal plant occurs throughout tropical regions of India extending from Kumaon to Assam and Myanmar, Bihar, Konkan to Sri Lanka.
