New Delhi/IBNS: India is celebrating on Wednesday the 24th anniversary of the victory over Pakistan in the Kargil War which raged between May and July in 1999.

The war broke out when the Pakistani soldiers took the advantage of harsh terrain and extreme weather conditions and crossed over to the Indian territory of Kargil in Jammu and Kashmir.

In retaliation, the Indian forces fought back and reclaimed the land.

The Indian Armed Forces reclaimed the land in a combat now famously known as 'Operation Vijay'.

Paying homage to the martyrs, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "Kargil Vijay Diwas brings to the fore the heroic saga of those wonderful bravehearts of India, who will always remain an inspiration for the countrymen.

"On this special day, I bow down and salute him from the bottom of my heart. Long live India!"

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted, "Paid tributes to India’s bravehearts at Kargil War Memorial in Dras. The Indian Armed Forces fought valiantly and many soldiers laid down their lives in the line of duty. The nation will remain indebted to their service and sacrifice."

On the occasion of the Kargil Vijay Diwas, various events have been scheduled.

Wreath-laying ceremonies, memorial services and parades have been held in diverse parts of the vast country.
