Karnataka BJP holds protest rally against increasing rape cases in state
Bengaluru, Nov 5 (IBNS): Amid growing incidents of rape and sexual assault cases in Karnataka, particularly in Bengaluru during recent times, opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led a protest rally on Wednesday in the heart of the city, during which about 20 members of the party courted arrest, media reported.
Highlighting the issue of repeated rape and sexual harrassment cases engulfing the 'garden city', of which in many cases minor schoolgirls were the victim, BJP took out a protest march to criticizing the role of Congress-led state Government in maintaining the law and order of the state.
"In Karnataka, particularly in Bangalore, incidents like rapes and sexual harassment are increasing rapidly day by day. Our home minister has not taken any responsibility," former Karnataka chief minister and senior BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa, who took part in the protests told NDTV.
"The police is not serious about these things. That is why we are protesting and more than 6000 mahila workers are having a protest meeting. The government has failed in all respects. Law and order situation is getting worse by the day," he added.
Apart from Yeddyurappa, BJP leaders R Ashok and MP Shobha Karandlaje along with Mahila Morcha activists protest against the recent sexual harresment cases on children in Bengaluru on Wednesday.
Since July, a series of alleged sexual assaults on schoolchildren has rocked capital Bengaluru.
The most disturbing fact was that majority of those incidents reportedly took place inside the schools.
On October 29, a schoolgirl in Shivamogga died in a hospital in Manipal. According to the girl's parents, she was abducted, drugged or poisoned and then raped.
Recently, a 6-year-old child was sexually assaulted in a Bengaluru school.
Even there were reports on Tuesday that a woman was gangraped by a gang of robbers in front of her family in HSR in Bengaluru.
There have been reports of rapes from other parts of the state as well.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the BJP was trying to create confusion in the minds of the people.
"The BJP is creating confusion in the minds of the people. In their period, there were attacks on churches. The BJP workers were taking the law into their hands. We did not permit that. The law and order situation is good in Karnataka," the Chief Minister had said.
Rebutting the Chief Minister's statement, BJP state party chief Prahlad Joshi said, "They are saying the BJP is poilticising the issue. What is that? Let him explain. We will go to the people and see that this government behaves properly."
It has been learnt that CM on Tuesday asked the CID to investigate the Shivamogga incident.
