Karnataka imposes night curfew to curb the spread of mutant coronavirus

Bengaluru/IBNS: The Karnataka government has imposed night curfew--10 pm to 6 am--till January 2 over fears of mutant strain of coronavirus which is 70 per cent more infectious.

Karnataka is the second state in the country to impose the night curfew after Maharashtra, which imposed night curfew last Monday from 11 pm to 6 am till January 5.

All passengers from the UK will have to undergo RT-PCR tests within 72 hours of their arrival.

Though Chief Minister YS Yediyurappa had said earlier that there was no need for night curfew, he announced it today and sought everyone's cooperation, reported the media.

Karnataka Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar said the curfew has been imposed to contain the spread of the mutant strain of coronavirus found in the UK.

There will be no restriction on inter-state travel, he said, and added that the administration is continuously monitoring the passengers travelling to the state.

"Between December 23 and January 2, no event or festive celebration is allowed to take place after 10 pm. It applies to every kind of event," he was quoted as saying by NDTV when he asked about new year and Christmas celebrations.

Maharashtra leads in Covid cases in the country - 19,02,458 - followed by Karnataka (9,11,382).
