Kashmir journalist alleges harassment by armyman

Srinagar, Aug 26 (IBNS) A young journalist from Kashmir, who also reports for IBNS news agency, has alleged that he has been harassed by a person who identified as a top ranking Army officer for revealing the sources of his news gathering.

Saleem Iqbal Qadri from Jammu and Kashmir, who as a correspondent reports for IBNS on all events of the state, alleged that Army is forcing him to reveal his news sources to them.

He said he was continuously asked on his mobile phone to provide them details of some news story sources he did.

"I received many phone calls from 22 RR (Rashtriya Rifles) Army camp located at Pazalpora Sopore of district Baramulla and the caller who identifies himself as a top ranking Army officer is forcing me to name my 'sources' from whom I obtain news information. I didn't oblige simply because I can't reveal the names of persons who provide me details
about any happening,"  Qadri said.

The scribe said that it is against the ethics of journalism to reveal the source of information.

A police official from the town said that "we fail to understand who has given such instructions to Army."

"We don't know anything about the matter," he said.

Meanwhile, when contacted a top Army official based in Srinagar assured that he will look into the matter and will take necessary steps to safeguard the scribe and his rights as a journalist.
