Kolkata: Huge smoke explosives recovered near Howrah bridge
Kolkata, Apr 20 (IBNS): A day prior to the assembly election in North Kolkata, police on Wednesday evening recovered large number of smoke explosives from a goods carrier near Howrah Bridge in Kolkata, officials said.
According to reports, police stopped a suspected vehicle and during search, the smoke explosive containers were recovered from the vehicle. Two passengers of the car have been arrested.
One senior official of Kolkata Police told IBNS, "During naka at Howrah Bridge we stopped a Kolkata-bound goods carrier- Tata Ace- to search and recovered at least 105 pieces of China made explosives, which produce huge sound and heavy smoke after explosion."
"We have arrested two- Amit Shaw and Pradip Roy- in connection with the case and seized the goods carrier as well. We are interrogating them to know why they were bringing the explosives," the officer further said.
One explosive expert told IBNS, "This kind of explosives, which produce heavy smoke of pink or orange colour, are generally used in flare guns in ships to send emergency alert. To indicate airport or helipad in smoggy weather, these are also used. Such explosives don't hurt anyone, after explosion. But if someone inhales this smoke, he could die."
However, no terror link has been found with the incident so far.
The arrested are likely to be produced to a local court in Kolkata on Thursday.
