Kolkata: Police face flak for Suman Mukhopadhyay detention

Kolkata, May 27 (IBNS): Police in Kolkata faced pouring criticism after Bengali filmmaker Suman Mukhopadhyay, a prominent critic of the state government, was detained in connection with the alleged suicide bid by Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee.

Mukhopadhyay, a vocal critic of the Mamata Banerjee government, was detained by at the New Town police station for over 23 hours before being allowed to go home Monday night.

Police had detained filmmaker for questioning after Bengali actress Swastika Mukherjee, said to be close to him, was hospitalised with an injury on her arm sparking speculation of a suicide bid.

Police justified the action saying there were attempts to “mystify the incident” and asserted that the injury to the actress was not accidental as claimed.

“We had to interrogate him because there have been attempts to mystify the incident. Contrary to claims by his family members that he was out of the country at the time of the incident, our investigation revealed that he was present at the place of occurence,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Bidhannagar) Arnab Ghosh said.

“As regards the injury (to the actress), prima facie it seems it is not an accidental wound. We are awaiting medical reports. Then we can ascertain conclusively (whether the injury is accidental or not),” Ghosh added.

Her family members however trashed the claims and asserted that the actress fell down during a party, sustaining injuries.
