Kolkata's AMRI hospital vandalized after patient's death due to alleged medical negligence

Kolkata, Oct 4 (IBNS): A young woman died at a privately-run hospital in south Kolkata on Tuesday night following which her family members allegedly ransacked the hospital and assaulted doctors and hospital staffers, reports said.

According to reports, Gulnar Khan, a resident of Sahid Nagar area under Garfa Police Station in southern Kolkata, had been admitted to AMRI hospital at Dhakuria in south part of the city on Sep 27 with symptoms of dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Family members of the woman claimed that doctors shifted Gulnar Khan to ICU on Sep 29 without informing them and demanded Rs. 2.10 lakh as hospital charges.

"Hospital authority had threatened us to stop my daughter's treatment if we did not pay the bill," Nazma Bibi, mother of Gulnar Khan, told IBNS.

"As we could not pay that huge bill, hospital did not provide proper treatment to my daughter and she died due to hospital's negligence," Nazma Bibi said.

Later on Tuesday at around 9:40 pm, the woman was pronounced dead. Soon after, her family members restored to vandalism.

AMRI Dhakuria authority alleged that a large mob attacked the hospital on Tuesday late night and damaged several properties of the hospital in an hour-long rampage.

"The mob had suddenly started breaking glass windows and doors at the entrance, reception and lobby of the hospital. Besides damaging several flower pots, they also tried to vandalize our ICU," a hospital official told IBNS.

"At least two doctors and several hospital staffers were assaulted by the attacking mob here," the official added.

Later, a heavy police force from local Lake Police Station rushed to the spot and arrested at least five persons for their alleged role in the vandalism, officials said.

Meanwhile, the hospital authority denied all allegations of medical negligence against them.

A senior official of AMRI Dhakuria told IBNS, "Condition of the young female patient was very critical. We tried our best, but unfortunately could not save her life."

However, family members of Gulnar Khan and AMRI hospital authority have lodged complaints against each other at Lake Police Station.

Police have started a probe into the matter, senior officials told IBNS.
