Kolkata's ex-police commissioner Rajeev Kumar in SC line of fire
New Delhi, Mar 26 (UNI): Supreme Court on Tuesday observed that the CBI status report on former Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar has made extremely grave disclosures.
The apex court observation came while hearing a plea filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against Kumar for allegedly not cooperating with it in connection with the probe in the Sharada chit fund scam case.
Headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, and also comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Deepak Gupta, the bench listened to submissions from various parties, including Kumar, the Mamata Banerjee-led Bengal government and the premier probe agency.
The bench said that since the status report was filed by the CBI in a sealed cover, the court could not pass orders.
It granted CBI liberty to file appropriate application against Kumar within 10 days.
The apex court also asked Kumar to submit his reply within 10 days to the CBI application after it was filed.
"We will determine the charges and counter charges after hearing both sides," the apex court ruled, declining to drop the initiation of contempt proceedings against the WB DGP and Chief Secretary.
