Lack of infrastructure forces students to cross river to reach school in Assam’s Nagaon district
Guwahati, Sept 19 (IBNS): Lack of proper infrastructure have forced students of four revenue villages in central Assam’s Nagaon district to cross a river every day in order to reach schools.
With absence of proper connectivity or bridge, the students of Palashabari, Tetelisara area in the central Assam’s district have been forced to cross the Kapili river to reach their schools.
The aforementioned activity, which is continuing for the past several decades, is laden with life-threatening risks.
However, it has become a norm for these students and locals to cross the river using small boats several decades.
It becomes extremely difficult for the students of the area to cross the river during monsoon season.
Incidences of people falling from the boat while trying to cross the river too have been recorded.
According to the reports, around 3000 families live in the Palashabari, Tetelisara area under Barhampur assembly constituency.
Speaking about the ordeal, a student of Palashabari Lalit Chandra Nath Middle English School said, “In the past three years, we crossed the river by using boat to reach our school. We are scared while crossing the river. It is difficult for us to cross the river during the rainy season.”
The locals have said that despite several requests to government officials, proper aid is yet to reach the area.
Tulsi Nath, a boatman of Palashabari area, said that it is very unfortunate that the students of the school have been forced to cross the river in the past 28 years.
“The students are forced to miss their classes during the monsoon and flood season. Around 4000 families are living in this area. There are three schools, two health centres in the area but the people are facing lot of problems,” Tulsi Nath said.
Tagar Nath, Headmaster of Palashabari Lalit Chandra Nath Middle English School said: “I have served here for the past 28 years. A bridge is urgently needed. There are four revenue villages in the Palashabari area and all the students of this area study in this school. We are using small boats to cross the river.”
