Land bill amendments aimed at farmers' welfare: Modi in 'Mann Ki Baat'
New Delhi, Mar 22 (IBNS): Amid severe criticisms over the amendments to the land acquisition bill, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reached out to the farmers and said his government is making the changes for the welfare of them.
He said the Oppositions are spreading wrong information about the bill as they are conspiring to keep the farmers poor.
"We want the welfare of the farmers, their children and the villages. We want to overcome the shortcomings," said PM Modi on land bill.
"Land Bill is not anti-farmer but pro-farmer. Oppositions are spreading wrong information about the bill. These rumours are being spread so that farmers are not developed and the country does not progress in a larger sense," said he.
"Oppositions are spreading wrong information as part of a conspiracy to keep farmers poor," said Modi.
He said the government has made some amendments to make the law pro-farmer.
"Under the previous government's law, the farmers would have received no more compensation than they did under the old law. We have fixed this, " the Prime Minister said.
"We changed law so that farmers get adequate compensation of their land acquired," said Modi
He said states are free to follow the old law if they don't want to embrace the amendments.
"If states have objection to amendments in land acquisition bill, they can continue with the old law," said he.
At the commencement of his address, he lauded the farmers for posting several questions to him.
"This is a different experience while speaking to the farmers. When I got the idea of speaking to farmers, I was not aware that rural people will ask me so many questions. I never knew you (farmers) were so aware. I want to salute you that you suffer so much pain," Modi said.
"I will try my best to work for your welfare. I am there with you in this hour of need," Modi assured the farmers over the problem of unseasonal rains, adding that :"I assure that I'll ask the state and the Centre government to work the most in solving your problems."
"This government's ministers are travelling to the affected regions to take stock of the situation and offer whatever assistance and help they can to farmers," said he.
This was the sixth edition of 'Mann Ki Baat' programme.
The address assumed special significance as the government will try to get the Land Acquisition Amendment Bill passed in the Rajya Sabha by April 5, where it is in minority.
The Lok Sabha has already passed the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Bill, 2015 with nine amendments by a voice vote on March 9.
