Lok Sabha polls 2019: India voting in first phase of elections

New Delhi, Apr 11 (IBNS): Voting for the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls started on Thursday morning as people in 91 seats are queuing up in front of booths to exercise their franchise.

The 91 seats, where polling are taking place today, are spread across 18 states and two union territories.

Voting in the Lok Sabha polls will take place in seven phases this time.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged people,specially first time voters, to turn out in record numbers and exercise their franchise. 

"2019 Lok Sabha elections commence today. I call upon all those whose constituencies are voting in the first phase today to turn out in record numbers and exercise their franchise. I specially urge young and first-time voters to vote in large numbers," the PM tweeted.

In the first phase of voting that commenced the process of electing the Prime Minister of world's largest democracy will see a total of 142 million people casting their votes in 170,664 poll booths to decide the fates of 1,279 candidates.

Voting in single phase is taking place in Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Uttarakhand, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Telangana.

At the same time, voting is being in held in parts of Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra, Manipur, Odisha, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

In the first phase of election, fates of key leaders like  Nitin Gadkari (Nagpur), Kiren Rijiju (Arunachal West), General VK Singh (Ghaziabad), Satyapal Singh (Baghpat) and Mahesh Sharma (Gautam Buddha Nagar). Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh and his son Jayant Chaudhary will be decided.

Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and parts of Odisha are voting for Assembly polls.

Counting of votes will take place on May 23.
