Lookout notice issued against 2 French Film-makers for filming Jarawa

Port Blair, Nov 7 (IBNS): The Andaman & Nicobar administration has issued a lookout notice to two french film-makers who secretly filmed and made documentary on Jarawa, the aboriginal tribes of the islet, media reported.

According to reports, French film director Alexandre Dereims and producer Claire Beilvert met the Jarawa tribals and filmed the documentary between January 28 and February 11 this year.

Dereims reportedly won the support of the Jarawa community in exchange for sacks of rice which he provided them.

Media reported that the duo allegedly uploaded details and photographs and videos of the documentary, named ' Organic Jarawa' on a website and a Facebook page, but later removed them.

Father Saw Saytha of Baptist Church at Mayabunder has been arrested for helping the Frenchmen.

Two locals belonging to Karen community were earlier arrested.

It has been learnt that, Andaman and Nicobar police has issued a lookout notice.

Apart from that, the local administration is comtemplating to take the matter up with the Ministry of External Affairs and the help of Interpol would be sought to trace the filmmaker duo.

According to Indian law, making any contact or shooting or releasing photos, videos with the protected Jarawa tribals is illegal and the offender may face up to seven years of stringent imprisonment.
