New Delhi, Aug 24 (IBNS): Maharashtra Governor K Sankaranarayanan has tendered his resignation after he was transferred to Mizoram, reports said.

The BJP-led NDA government of Narendra Modi effected yet another change in gubernatorial posts.

Till appointment of a new governor, Gujarat Governor Om Prakash Kohli has been given the additional charge of Maharashtra.

"Shri K. Sankaranarayanan, Governor of Maharashtra is transferred and appointed as Governor of Mizoram for the remainder of his term," the President's  Secretariat  said in a press communique on Sunday.

Speaking on the issue of his transfer,  Sankaranarayanan told media: " "It is not possible for me to go to Mizoram."

"As a Governor I have never played any politics. I was friendly with all political parties, friendly with the BJP also" he said.

Earlier Kamla Beniwal was shifted from Mizoram as governor. Beniwal was before that the governor of Gujarat when she was on a confrontational path with then chief minister Narendra Modi.

Faced with criticism of vendetta politics for removing Beniwal earlier, the ruling BJP had said she was removed from the office not for political reasons but for graft charges in keeping with established Constitutional norms.

Barely two months before the completion of her tenure, Beniwal was sacked by the union government as the Mizoram governor this month, triggering condemnation from the Opposition.

"Action was taken within rules, as per Constitution. There are serious allegations. The government has taken serious note of her conduct," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu said earlier.

Naidu ruled out any vendetta politics.

It has been alleged by the government that  Beniwal used state aircraft  Beechcraft  53 times to fly to  Jaipur, her hometown. She has also been linked to a land scam in Rajasthan.
