Mamata Banerjee agrees to Centre's request to acquire and give land for strengthening Indo-Bangla border
Kolkata/New Delhi, Nov 10 (IBNS): After a delay for two years, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has finally agreed to the Centre's request to acquire and give it 300 acres of land in the state to strengthen India-Bangladesh border, media reports said.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had requested the state to give the land to construct barbed-wire fencing along the border of the two nations.
The main purpose of the strengthening of the border is to prevent the Bangladeshi and Rohingya people from infiltrating as well as stopping smuggling along the international border.
West Bengal shares 2,216 km out of 4,096 km of India-Bangladesh border.
The Home Minister also made similar requests to Chief Ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura and Bihar in relation to the acquisition of land in these states.
Singh, on Friday, also reviewed several projects which have been undertaken along the borders with China, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Myanmar.
