Masks mandatory inside car even while driving alone, orders Delhi High Court

New Delhi/IBNS: The Delhi High Court on Wednesday ruled masks are mandatory inside a car even while driving alone, amid the massive spike in Covid-19 daily cases.

Judge Pratibha M Singh passed the order while hearing petitioners who were fined by the Delhi Police for not wearing masks while driving alone.

"Even if you are alone in the car, why object to wearing a mask? It is for your own safety," the judge said as quoted by NDTV.

"The pandemic crisis has increased. Whether a person is vaccinated or not, they should wear masks," she added.

The court has said drivers often have to roll down the window of a car at traffic signals, running the risk of infecting others.

During the hearings, the Union Health Ministry had told the court that there was no rule making masks mandatory for a lone traveller inside a car

The order came on a day India registered 1,15,736 new cases, the highest single-day figure since the outbreak of the virus last year.

During the same period, 630 people also died due to the virus. The total death toll due to the virus now stands at 1,66,177.
