Massive protests erupt in Delhi after man opens fire at Jamia students

| @indiablooms | Jan 30, 2020, at 10:24 pm

New Delhi/IBNS: A teenager on Thursday pulled out a gun and shot at students protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) outside the Jamia Milia University in Delhi, leaving one injured and triggering massive protest in the city.

In a dramatic scene, which took place just before 2 pm, the teenager was seen brandishing his gun and pointing towards the protestors while walking backside.

The entire incident was captured in a video where the man could be heard saying, "Yeh lo azaadi (Here is your freedom). Delhi Police zindabaad (Hail Delhi Police). Hindustan zindabaad (Hail India)."

The injured student was rushed to a hospital.

Meanwhile, the incident has triggered more protests as hundreds more joined in, breaking police barricades, as they tried to march towards Rajghat.

According to reports, the police at the spot, present in large number, moved to action only after the shooter opened fire.

Reacting to the incident, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the culprit won't be spared as he has asked the police commissioner to take stringent action.

Shah tweeted, "I talked to Delhi Police Commissioner over the shooting which took place in Delhi today. The central government will not tolerate any such incident. The investigation will take place and the culprit won't be spared."

In another reaction, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Manoj Tiwari linked the shooting incident with plans to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"There were talks of shooting PM recently, now shooting has taken place. They [anti-CAA protesters at Shaheen Bagh and Jamia] are raising anti-Hindu slogans, are asking for 'Jinnah-wali azadi'. Despite the kind of slogans raised there, the Aam Adami party's deputy CM says they are standing with the Shaheen bagh [protesters]," Manoj Tiwari was quoted as saying in an India Today report.

The shooter has been detained and is being questioned.

"A crowd was coming from Jamia. The person came from the crowd," senior police officer Chinmoy Biswal told NDTV as the police faced questions about their slow response.

The shooter, identified as Rambhakt Gopal from his Facebook profile, has been arrested.

Gopal was brandishing his gun openly, and his action was preplanned, claimed media reports.

The attacker's Facebook profile shows he was live on the social networking site before firing at the protestors.

The incident took place while the students were marching towards Rajghat.

Slamming the BJP, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra tweeted, "These incidents are possible when BJP ministers and leaders make provocative speeches. The Prime Minister must answer what kind of Delhi he wants to make. Does he stand by violence or non-violence? Does he stand by development or anarchy?"
