Medical relief ops stepped up in J&K
Srinagar, Sept 17 (IBNS): With Jammu and Kashmir witnessing the worst flood in six decades and losing about 400 lives in the state, relief operations have been stepped up and measures are being taken to prevent any communicable disease outbreak.
This has gained fillip especially after the visit of Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan to the state recently to review the ongoing relief activities.
The Minister met the Governor, Chief Minister, Health Minister, Chief Secretary and Health Secretary of the north Indian state.
He advised the state government on public health measures that need to be taken to prevent communicable disease outbreaks.
Meanwhile, the death toll in the disaster has reached 400.
After successfully opening the national highway between Jammu and Srinagar, Army Engineers and Border Roads Organisation (BRO) restored connectivity between Rajouri and Budhal by constructing a 180 feet bailey bridge over Ans river at Kot Ranka on Tuesday.
Nearly 10,000 personnel of Army Engineers and BRO, equipped with over 400 dozers, excavators and JCBs, besides 300 tippers and dumpers, have restored road links at over 1000 places damaged by landslides or flash floods, besides reconstruction of various bridges across the state during the last few days.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is monitoring the situation arising out of floods in Jammu and Kashmir.
A control room has been set up and functioning 24x7 basis in the Ministry (Phone 23061469, 23063205, 23061302)
A 29 member clinical team comprising physicians, pediatricians and gynecologists from central government hospitals have been posted to Kashmir. They are providing specialized care in the district hospitals of Anantnag, Phulwama, Kulgam, Shopian, Badgam, and Bandipur.
Psycho- social teams for psycho social need assessment have been deployed from National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore.
A group of 20 specialist doctors from Delhi Medical Association have volunteered to serve the flood affected areas of Jammu & Kashmir. They will be reaching Srinagar tomorrow and will be further deployed in the affected areas.
Indian Red Cross Society has so far supplied 1082 tents (each to house eight people) from their stores at Delhi (750) and Arakkonam (332).
Two large water purification units, each having a capacity of purifying 50,000 litres of water per day, and six small water purification units (14000 litres / day) have been deployed by Indian Red Cross Society (along with trained manpower).
