Kolkata, Mar 13 (IBNS): The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) on Friday named senior party leader and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal assembly Surya Kanta Mishra as the new state secretary of the party's West Bengal unit.

He will replace Biman Basu.

Basu had been serving as the state secretary since 2006.

The decision on naming Mishra as the new state secretary was taken at the  first meeting of the newly elected state committee.

The party said Mishra's name was proposed by Basu and seconded by former state chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
