'Misunderstood': Ghulam Nabi Azad clarifies after praising PM Modi

New Delhi/IBNS: Days after senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad's praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not go well within his party, sources close to him asserted that he had been "misunderstood", said media reports.

Speaking at a public meeting in Jammu, Azad had said: "I am liking a lot of things about many leaders. I am from a village and feel proud of it. Even our Prime Minister comes from a village and used to sell tea."

"Although we are political rivals, I appreciate that he doesn’t hide his true self,” Azad had said about PM Modi.

The remarks came weeks after PM Modi's emotional farewell speech for Azad when the Congress leader retired from the Rajya Sabha.

NDTV quoting sources close to Azad said he did not praise the Prime Minister, that he had been clearly misunderstood and that he would clarify "at an opportune moment".

The reference to the Prime Minister was only to make a point since he kept saying he used to sell tea, the sources added.

Azad, who is generally considered a part of the dissident Congress leaders, will reportedly also campaign for the party in the upcoming state elections.

This is considered as an answer to Congress leaders who have attacked dissidents for not supporting the party in polls instead of publicly criticizing its moves.
