Srinagar/UNI: Mobile internet services in the Kashmir valley were suspended on Wednesday for security reasons.

The suspension comes against the backdrop of an encounter in Pulwama, where a top militant commander is believed to be trapped. In another encounter in the district, two militants were killed so far in a gunfight.

According to official sources, the internet services of all cellular companies, including Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), were suspended as a precautionary measure.

A joint Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) was launched by security forces at Beighpors in Awantipur following credible inputs about presence of militants last night.

“Contact was established with militants on Wednesday morning,” they said, adding a top militant commander is trapped, without mentioning the name of the militant.

Meanwhile, advising television channels not to speculate about Beighpora, Awantipora, a police spokesman said this unconfirmed reporting could have law and order bearings.

“Operation at Beigpora Awantipur is going on. Any Speculative reporting unconfirmed stuff having law and order bearings is highly irresponsible on the part of some channels. They are advised to hold their guns please,” he said.

Jammu and Kashmir government, in the last week of January, lifted six-month long ban on mobile internet.

However, only 2G services were restored, creating problem for those who might want to attend classes or study online.

Meanwhile, the gag on high speed internet was on April 27 extended through an order issued by J&K administration, crushing the hopes of students, who were keen on availing online classes to cover the academic losses due to the lockdown.

Mobile internet and broadband service of all Cellular companies were suspended in the Kashmir valley on August 5, 2019, when centre scrapped Article 370 and 35 A besides divided the state into two Union Territories (UTs).
