MPs to be briefed about surgical strikes today

| | Oct 18, 2016, at 06:15 pm
New Delhi, Oct 18 (IBNS) : The Indian army and Government officials will on Tuesday brief the Members of Parliament about surgical strikes conducted across the Line of Control (LoC) on September 29, reports said.

Among those who will brief the MPs and  take their questions as well will be the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) and the top brass of the Ministry of External Affairs.

This will  be the second briefing on army operations in PoK to parliamentarians within a week.

However, during the first briefing, panel chairman BJP’s BC Khanduri did not encourage members to seek clarifications.

The strikes, though initially supported by all parties, have led to a political battle.

Congress has demanded that the Government  reveal more details and “proof” to counter Pakistan’s propaganda that the army operation never took place.

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi had accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of indulging in 'khoon ki dalali,' implying that the Government was out to extract political mileage out of the  sacrifices made by soldiers.

His remark evoked strong criticism from the Government and the BJP.

The surgical strikes were conducted to destroy terrorist launch pads in the PoK after after the  Uri Army base was attacked by heavily-armed Pakistani terrorists on September 18, in which 19 soldiers were killed.
