Mueenul Haq appointed Pak High Commissioner to India

New Delhi, May 21 (UNI) Career diplomat Mueen ul Haq is the new High Commissioner of Pakistan to India.

"New Delhi, India, is very important...After consultation, I have decided to appoint Mueenul Haq, the current ambassador in France, who will be sent to (New) Delhi, and I hope that he (Haq) will deliver," Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said in a statement.

Qureshi's statement came as he left for the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek to take part in the foreign minister's meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation on Tuesday that would bring him face to face with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

There were reports earlier this week that the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan is considering reviving back-channel diplomacy with India with an objective to resume peace talks with India.

The post of High Commissioner to India had fallen vacant after Sohail Mehmood was appointed Pakistan’s new foreign secretary in April.
Qureshi has expressed hope that Haq would perform his "new job with the best of his abilities."

Along with Haque, Qureshi announced appointment of five other envoys to countries such as China, Japan and Malaysia.
"I wish the newly appointed officers good luck and hope they represent Pakistan with utmost dignity and effectiveness," he tweeted.
