Mumbai, June 8 (IBNS): Delivering another landmark for the city, metro service commences on Sunday in the city of Mumbai, making commutation easy for Mumbaikars.
The service commences amid a row over the fares.

According to Reliance Mumbai Metro website, the service will be opened for public at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

There has been a long dispute over the tariff of the metro service, which is expected to ease the Mumbai traffic pressure.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan wants the tariff to remain same as quoted in the tender.

"If it wants to go for a hike, it should approach the tariff fixation committee justifying the reasons," Chavan told reporters.

Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) is a joint venture company comprising Anil Ambani's Reliance Infrastructure, Veolia Transport and the MMRDA.

Phase 1 of the project comprises of a service over 11.4 km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar stretch.

The metro service will start 5.30 a.m. and continue till midnight with a total of 16 rakes deployed on the sector daily.

The project will serve the IT centres of Versova and the business and manufacturing areas of Ghatkopar at a speed of 80 kmph.

Each rake comprises of four coaches, which will have a capacity of around 375 commuters, which means around 1,500 commuters per service.

About 600,000 commuters are expected to travel by the Mumbai Metro daily.

There will be 250 services both ways in air-conditioned rakes, at intervals of around four minutes.

The 11.4 km Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar stretch will be covered within 21 minutes.

There are 12 stations in the stretch starting with Versova, DN Nagar, Azad Nagar, Andheri, Western Express Highway (WEH), Chakala, Airport Road, Marol Naka, Saki Naka, Subhash Nagar, Asalpha Road and terminating at Ghatkopar.

Mumbai will now await the Colaba-Bandra-Charkop (38.24 km) line and Bandra-Kurla-Mankhurd (13.37 km) line  in this phase itself.
