Mumbai woman allegedly denied flat for being Muslim
Mumbai, May 27 (IBNS) In an alleged case of religious discrimination, a Mumbai woman has claimed that she was denied a flat for being a Muslim.
25-year-old Misbah Quadri claimed that was about to move in a 3-BHK apartment at Sanghvi Heights in Wadala, Mumbai when she was warned by the broker that the housing society did not accept Muslim tenants, reports said.
Quadri said the broker told her that she would have to sign a "no-objection certificate" declaring that if she faced any harassment from her neighbours because of her religion, the builder, the owner and the broker "would not be legally responsible".
"Many brokers refused to show me houses because I'm a Muslim. Many residents would also complain because of my religion. Once I was asked to move out within a week of moving in," media reports quoted Quadri as saying.
Within a week, the broker threatened to call the police and get her thrown out of the flat, she added.
Lawyer-activist Shehzad Poonawalla has filed a petition with National Commission for Minorities and National Human Rights Commission.
In the recent past a Mumbai-based diamond export company rejected an MBA graduate's job application for being a Muslim.
